On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at approximately 12:00pm, the Marathon Petroleum Refinery in Detroit, Michigan experienced an oil spill on the south and east sides of the property. At this time no injuries have been reported and there is no threat to employees or the community. All appropriate local, state, and federal agencies have been contacted and air monitoring is being conducted. Booms have been deployed in the river surrounding the refinery, as a preventive measure. As details become available, updates will be released.
1:30 Update – North and South bound I-75, Schaefer Hwy, and Fort Street has been closed. The emergency responders continue to work to address the incident as quickly and safely as possible.
2:16 Update – The spill has been contained with no offsite impact. The refinery continues to monitor the clean up efforts as we return to normal operations.
2:40 Update – The freeway estimated to reopen at at by 12:00am.
